NEEDS: Dynamic Urban Environmental Exposures on Depression and Suicide

Who are we?

To stimulate research innovation and novel ideas, the NEEDS team is multidisciplinary. Different perspectives through the lenses of geographers, psychologists, demographers and epidemiologists are going to unravel environment-health relations.

Marco Helbich is Associate Professor at the Department of Human Geography and Spatial Planning at Utrecht University. Marco is fascinated in addressing human-environment associations in cities using data-driven, computational models and geotechnologies. As principal investigator Marco leads the NEEDS project.

Hannah Roberts has a PhD in environmental psychology and works as postdoctoral researcher. Hannah investigates how exposures experienced along people’s daily mobility path might trigger depression.

Paulien Hagedoorn has a PhD in sociology, and a background in demography and geography. In the NEEDS project Paulien works as a postdoctoral researcher and explores how past environmental exposures along people’s residential history affect suicide later in life.
